EvergreenHealth Monroe Receives Five-Star Rating for Appendectomy

The health system is among the top performers in key patient outcomes according to a national Healthgrades study of nearly 4,500 hospitals

Monroe, Wash. – Healthgrades has awarded EvergreenHealth Monroe a five-star rating for appendectomy outcomes in its 2019 Report to the Nation, which evaluates the quality of hospitals across the country based solely on patients' clinical outcomes.

Every year, Healthgrades analyzes three years of Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data to produce a detailed report on mortality and complication rates, offering patients data-based resources to make informed health care decisions. The 2019 report analyzed patient records from nearly 4,500 acute care hospitals nationwide, assessing hospital performance relative to 32 common conditions and procedures. Additionally, Healthgrades evaluated outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using three years of all-payer data provided by 15 states, including Washington.

“As a public hospital dedicated to providing our community with the highest quality care, we are honored to receive a five-star rating from Healthgrades,” said Renée Jensen, chief administrative officer of EvergreenHealth Monroe. “This achievement serves to reinforce our commitment to improving our patient’s clinical outcomes, and we strive to continue identifying ways to deliver the absolute best patient care.”

To help consumers evaluate hospital performance specific to specialty service lines, Healthgrades recognizes a hospital’s quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as five-star (statistically significantly better than expected), three-star (not statistically different from expected) and one-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories. The latest report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals nationally, regionally and at the local level, and the impact that this variation may have on health outcomes.

Understanding personal risk can help patients take steps that may improve the likelihood of successful treatment and recovery. A patient receiving care at a one-star rated hospital is at much greater risk of suffering a complication or death than a similar patient receiving care at a five-star rated hospital for the same procedure. For example, from 2015-2017, if all hospitals as a group performed similarly to hospitals receiving five-stars as a group, on average 222,210 lives could potentially have been saved and 157,210 complications could potentially have been avoided.

“With so many choices for care, consumers often find that their health journey can be difficult to navigate,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Healthgrades. “Information about hospital quality is helpful as they make decisions for their health, and EvergreenHealth Monroe has distinguished itself as an exceptional organization for clinical outcomes.”
