About Your Surgery

Our office will work in tandem with surgical services at EvergreenHealth Monroe to make sure your surgery is safe and worry-free. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions about the surgical experience:

How is my surgery scheduled?

If the doctor has determined that you need surgery, we will work with you to find a day that works with your schedule.  The surgery scheduling department at EvergreenHealth Monroe will provide the time of the surgery, which we won't know until the day before the surgery. This is done to ensure the order of the day's surgeries is based on the patients' health and length of the procedure.

If you have not heard from surgery scheduling by 4pm the day prior to your surgery, please call (360) 794-1496 to ask for your time.

What do I need to know about my surgery?

We want your surgery experience to be worry free.  EvergreenHealth Surgical & Vein Care will coordinate all aspects of your surgery, working in concert with you and EvergreenHealth Monroe.

We'll cover the basic questions you'll have about preparing for surgery, and then you'll meet with the pre-operative nurse at the hospital for more detail. This appointment should be scheduled within two weeks of your surgery.

Our office will handle the necessary paperwork and appointment scheduling, including:

  • Sending your surgery details to EvergreenHealth Monroe.
  • Scheduling your pre-operative appointments with the hospital.
  • Pre-authorizations and eligibility verification with your insurance provider.
  • Any radiology and pathology needed prior to or during the procedure.
  • Bowel preparation instructions.
  • PCP or cardiac clearance, if required.
  • Instructions and phone numbers you will need for any questions.

How long will I stay in the hospital?

We will provide you with the length of your stay. If it's outpatient surgery, you will go home on the same day. The ambulatory care nurses at the hospital will provide your post-operative instructions including pain management and wound care. Our office will call the day after your surgery to see how you are feeling and to schedule your post-operative appointment (typically scheduled within 10-14 days unless otherwise specified by the doctor).

May I eat or drink before my surgery?

No eating or drinking, including water, after midnight the night before your surgery. It is important to make sure your stomach is empty to minimize the chances of vomiting during the procedure. During your pre-operative visit, the nurse will advise you what medications that you may or may not take.

Where do I go the day of the surgery?

Arrive at the EvergreenHealth Monroe front entrance and let the reception desk know you are checking in for surgery today. The receptionist will direct you to admitting.

What will I be able to do after surgery?

You may feel tired and have pain the first few days – this is normal. Make sure you have your prescription for pain medications before you leave the hospital, if they are required.

Walking is good and should be done each day to help you regain strength.

Pain medicine can cause constipation, so it's essential to add fiber to your diet. Also drink plenty of water, and eat raw vegetables, raw fruits and grains to maintain regular bowel movements. A supplement of fiber – for example Citrucel or Colace (nature stool softeners and not laxatives) – may be used. You should not drive or operate machinery while taking narcotics.  The doctor may also impose weight lifting restrictions.

Is my incision healing normally?

Your incision may look swollen or discolored. Signs of a possible infection include redness that is increasing, red streaks, bleeding or pus-like drainage around the incision or a fever above 100 degrees. Please notify your doctor in the event of any of these conditions.
